DO NOT TRAVEL IN OR TO WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA
I-40 is impassable in multiple locations.
I-26 is closed at the Tennessee state line.
There are many closed roads that are not listed on
this site as many areas are not able to report at this time.
All roads in Western North Carolina should be
considered closed and non-emergency travel is prohibited.
From the Cashiers Chamber:
Dear Cashiers Area Chamber and Friends,
I hope all of you are well
and safe after the storm. I am writing with an update after talking with Chief
Randy Dillard. Emergency Management requests that folks shelter in place and
stay off the roads unless it is necessary to travel. In the Cashiers Area, as
of 12:30 PM, on Sunday:
1. 64 E in Sapphire is closed.
2. 107 S to 85 is open. Haywood Electric is doing repair work so
may be close 107 S from time to time.
3. 107 N to Sylvia is open, but may be closed from time to time
for electrical work.
4. 64 W to Highlands is open.
A COMMAND CENTRAL has been
set up at the Cashiers-Glenville Fire Department and there is free water
available. MRE’s may be available soon.
• AT&T service has been restored and Verizon estimates
restoration later today.
• It is heartbreaking to report that many of our surrounding
communities and neighbors did not fare well.
o Asheville remains cut off from the outside world except by
air, along with several other communities in Western North Carolina.
o Part of I-40 slid into the river in the gorge at the TN and NC
state line. According to TDOT, it will be closed for quite some time.
o Chimney Rock village has been wiped out by extreme flash
flooding.
o Dams have broken in NC and TN and others are at their breaking
point.
o The Tuckasegee River breached its banks and flooded parts of
Dillsboro.
